Hillsborough slur about fans burning police horse false, says CPS16m Hillsborough slur about fans burning police horse false, says CPS
Prosecutors find insufficient evidence for criminal case against officer over claims that horse was burned with cigarettes A notorious slur against Liverpool supporters after the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, alleging that some people trapped in the crush outside the Leppings Lane turnstiles had seriously burned a police horse, has been found by the Crown Prosecution Service to have been false. The CPS concluded that there was some evidence to suggest that a former mounted South Yorkshire police constable, David Scott, gave an untrue account when he claimed that his horse appeared singed afterwards. However the CPS decided there was not enough evidence to prove to a criminal standard that Scott’s statements were fabricated.

It is simple for England: get Steve Smith out or lose the Ashes | Adam Collins1h 37m It is simple for England: get Steve Smith out or lose the Ashes | Adam Collins
The Australia captain is fully aware of his role as the main character in every story these sides write but the next move in the third Test is down to Joe RootThe roar Joe Root let out when he reviewed correctly to dismiss Cameron Bancroft shortly after David Warner nicked off was guttural and instructive. The England captain had got the big call right and they had two in a hurry. After a horrid collapse before lunch, and an imposing start for Australia, England were suddenly back in the day, with Craig Overton looking more dangerous by the delivery. But the fate of the hours to come was always going to rest on how they went when the next guy walked out, Root’s opposite number, Steve Smith. “Buts” don’t come bigger in international cricket. When he gets it right, and so often he does, Australia almost always win. Only two of his 21 centuries have been reached in losing teams – and England can’t afford to lose here. It’s binary. Get Smith or get stuffed.

In the city where his bizarre first contact with Cameron Bancroft occurred, the England keeper used his head to score a ton and earn the Waca’s acclaimFrom being the butt of the jokes in Brisbane to slamming his head against his helmet three times in celebration, Jonny Bairstow’s hundred on the second day at the Waca was not just his finest Ashes moment to date but a touch of catharsis for England’s wicketkeeper. Every century has meaning for Bairstow. The look to the sky – though not quite clear blue in this instance due to some morning haze – is a recurring and well understood feature of his celebrations. But after sending these thoughts upstairs here, the 28-year-old also allowed himself an extra little nod to the incident that had previously defined his current tour.

Carlsen dominates global chess in its faster forms, half-hour rapid and 10-minute blitz. Nowadays, though, something often goes wrong in his classical slow tournaments, the arena where historic champions like José Raúl Capablanca, Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov strutted their stuff with only a few setbacks.

Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend15h Updated Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend
Will there be goals galore again at the Etihad, could West Ham finish off Hughes and is Jack Wilshere the man to bring some beauty back into Arsenal’s play? Since 2010-11, when the two games between these sides featured one goal between them, this has not been a fixture for goalkeepers. In 12 meetings there have been precisely 50 goals, scored at the rate of 4.2 per match. There is a recent history of mayhem, which coupled with the recent improvement in Tottenham’s form makes this probably the most likely moment for a while for the leaders’ successive-win juggernaut to come to a halt. Between this game and the visit to Arsenal at the end of February, City play Leicester twice, Newcastle twice, and five times against sides they have already beaten this season by an aggregate score of 24-3 (though that includes a visit to Liverpool). Should Pep Guardiola’s side emerge victorious on Saturday it becomes troublingly difficult to see where in the near future they might falter. Last season’s 2-2 draw in this fixture was memorable for some particularly poor goalkeeping: both City goals were down to Hugo Lloris clangers, and Claudio Bravo only faced two shots on target and let them both in. Ederson will present a more formidable obstacle for Spurs on Saturday.

The Clarets have given a talented manager time and autonomy to implement his ideas. It is no coincidence they are at the upper echelons of our leagueAfter losing 2-0 at Tottenham in midweek, we turn our attention to a Burnley team who are gaining plaudits throughout the country for their outstanding start to this Premier League season. At Brighton we are going through our first “bad patch” with one point gained from the last five games but we could not find a better football club than the one we face on Saturday for a case in point in terms of believing and sticking with their ethos and identity and where the word “panic” doesn’t seem to be in their vocabulary. In Sean Dyche, who is doing an outstanding job as manager, you can see the benefit of trust in him from the boardroom which has allowed him to put his football and cultural stamp on Burnley in the medium and long term. Now, after being relegated and bouncing back with him at the helm only 18 months ago, they find themselves close to a Champions League spot with nearly half of the season gone.

Only once since speed-gun records began has a group of quick bowlers averaged a faster speed than Australia’s did on the first day of the Waca TestIf the plan was to manage expectations ahead of the Waca’s final Ashes fling, it was expertly done. Not hot enough to bake the pitch, we were told by groundstaff. A bit soft, Steve Smith warned. Stories from recent years illustrated that the famous track was like Seattle’s grunge scene: once awesome, long finished. Australia’s pace trio found otherwise. The stumps score will confirm that this was England’s best shift on tour, but it won’t show how hard they had to work for their considerable first-day gains. According to CricViz, only once since speed-gun records began has a group of quicks averaged a faster speed than Australia’s did on the first day of this Test.

Martin Schmidt has Wolfsburg climbing the Bundesliga table but the winter break can’t come soon enough for RB Leipzig“I would say it’s something to learn from.” Divock Origi’s summary of his glaring second-half miss that might have given Wolfsburg victory over RB Leipzig might be considered to be erring on the side of circumspection – it was quite simply a sitter, despite his patient and detailed description of the circumstances that conditioned it to TV broadcasters after the game – but then again, his team are getting pretty good at that. The appointment of Martin Schmidt, removed as Mainz coach after a too-close-for-comfort end to last season, hardly fired the imagination when Wolfsburg decided to end the difficult reign of Andries Jonker. Yet if his new side haven’t yet returned to the heights they were scaling when Kevin De Bruyne was running the show, their new coach has helped them to find stability.
